Prayer Points | + | Alaska has one of the highest suicide rates in the U.S. Pray that the Lord would bring hope to the people of Alaska and help them to find their reason for living in Him alone. | | + | Alcohol use and abuse is extremely prevalent in Alaska. Because of this, there is a very high incidence of the childhood disability Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, which causes a host of health and behavioral problems in affected children. Pray for that God would draw the hearts of people in Alaska to Himself and that they would not turn to drinking in order to cope. Pray for children affected by Fetal Alcohol Syndrome that God would bring them stable health and healing for themselves and their families. | | + | Domestic and violent crime rates are also unusually high in Alaska, partially due to drug and alcohol abuse. Pray protection over the victims and that the Lord would heal the addictions and help these individuals to become who He has purposed them to be. | | + | Fun Facts: | | + | Alaska is the only U.S. state to have coastlines on three different seas | | + | The state motto is North to the Future | | + | Depending upon the time of year, parts of Alaska experience either 24 continuous hours of darkness or 24 continuous hours of daylight | | + | Alaska contains more than 1/2 of the glaciers in the world | | + | The record low temperature is -78 degrees Fahrenheit! | | + | Alaska has the lowest population density of any state in the U.S., and has 1 bear for every 21 people | Cultural Fun Facts |
Communication Info Communication while in country is a priority for Global Expeditions. Upon arrival in country, all students will be required to call home from payphones or GE-provided cell phones using a calling card. In some cases, students can bring phone cards from AT&T (as long as they also have the 800 access number for the specific country), but many times it is easier (and less expensive) to purchase a phone card in country. (Ask your Global Expeditions representative if an AT&T phone card is right for your trip!) They will be given an opportunity to purchase a phone card upon arrival. Parents can expect a phone call home within the first few days of the trip, but please keep in mind that not all countries will be able to call right away once on the ground. However, the Project Directors will be in touch with the office as soon as the flight arrives, and parents and friends can check the Global Expeditions website to see if the project has arrived safely. The arrival information will be posted as soon as the GE office has verbal confirmation from the Project Directors.
Global Expeditions guarantees that all students will call home at least once while in country. The heart of our ministry is to limit distractions during the trip, so for many trips, individual communication home will be limited. Also, students will usually not have access to the internet while in country. Email can be sent to the missionaries via the Global Expeditions website, and updates will be posted by the Project Directors every 3-5 days, depending on their access to internet and the reliability of internet in that country.
