Hello 2009 by Michael Mistretta

Hello 2009

I saw someone do this last year, and loved it so much that I wanted to try it this year. Seeing the faces of my friends when I asked if they wanted to "paint with light" was priceless.

So 2009. I'm not gonna lie—it doesn't feel much different.

But when I look back over 2008 and see how much has changed—how much I changed, I am both intimidated and excited by the thought of a another new year. Last year, I have met people that have encouraged and believed in me, as well as people that I can now call my best friends.

I think of all the loves and passions that I have discovered this year. In a way, I feel privileged to know what I love at such a young age, but at the same time, I feel that everyone should be in this place. Not just me.

And when I begin to think about a whole new year—one which is particularly exciting, as I will be finishing high school and going to Texas (CCM!) for two years—I can't even begin to imagine who I will meet, how I will grow, and how I will change.

I found this quote a couple weeks ago that really hit me:

"God’s been talking to me… basically, telling me to sit back and enjoy the ride, to let go of control. It may turn into a rollercoaster, but even when I get scared on a rollercoaster I don’t try to take over. I finish the ride and in hindsight see how awesome it was."

(Via Phil Coffman)

I have a whole lot of thoughts to write down on my blog in the morning, but at this very moment, I feel a sense of excitement for the year ahead. For the path that I can't really see, and am not really in control of.

Hello 2009, it's nice to meet you.

Look Up by Michael Mistretta

Look Up

I'm a huge fan of the whole let-the-little-kids-look-up-at-the-camera kind of thing. Especially when you have a nice wide aperture.

Also: I love the processing on this.

If it looks like she's crying, it's because she cries when she laughs. by Michael Mistretta

If it looks like she's crying, it's because she cries when she laughs.

For some reason, there's a really strong wind in the subway tunnel, which makes it a perfect place to pose for pictures.

This one's candid though. :)

Halo Brothers by Michael Mistretta

Halo Brothers

So this weekend I had a family photoshoot with a couple of my friends. Took 500 or so photos, and edited it down to about 100 good ones (huzzah! 20% rate—I'm pretty much a pro!). :P

This is one of my favourites, with the halo effect added for extra awesomeness. And as for the Strobist info: a single SB600 fired at the ceiling with a LightSphere on top.

Not bad for a one-lighting rig. Not bad at all…

the bigger the better
